Ocean Ecology expands into Australia and the APAC region under DNV

April 15, 2025

Ocean Ecology Limited (OEL) is excited to announce that from April 2025, the company will begin operating under DNV in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This expansion will be based out of DNV’s Energy Systems office in Perth, Western Australia.

This marks a significant milestone in OEL’s growth journey and establishes a dedicated presence within the Australian and APAC markets. The company will offer the same high-value marine environmental services that have underpinned its success in the UK and Europe — supporting offshore and coastal development with expert data collection, interpretation, and advice.

The move supports DNV’s broader strategy to deliver specialist and strategic service lines to both existing and emerging clients across the energy systems, infrastructure development, and aquaculture sectors. It also comes at a pivotal time for Australia, as the country accelerates plans for its burgeoning offshore wind industry.

OEL brings with it world-leading experience in supporting offshore wind farm development, having contributed to a significant proportion of existing and planned offshore wind projects across Europe. This includes extensive work throughout the North Sea, Irish Sea, and English Channel and Baltic — providing best-in-class marine environmental surveys to enable successful planning, consenting, and monitoring.

Josh Baker (pictured above) will lead OEL’s regional expansion in his new role as Marine Biodiversity and ESG Development Lead within DNV’s Supply Chain and Product Assurance business area.

A marine ecologist by background, Josh previously worked as a Project Manager at OEL and has more than a decade of experience living and working in Perth, giving him strong ties to the Australian marine science and energy sectors. Since joining OEL in 2023, he has led complex projects across offshore renewables, water treatment, and decommissioning and is well placed to introduce OEL’s offshore wind expertise into the Australian context.

Alongside offshore energy, aquaculture will also form a key focus area. OEL enters the APAC market with a strong track record of delivering robust environmental services to the Scottish aquaculture sector, while DNV brings unparalleled knowledge and technical capability from its leadership role in Norway’s aquaculture industry — the largest in the world.

With more than a decade of proven capability, OEL delivers comprehensive marine environmental and geophysical survey solutions across a range of sectors, including:

  • Offshore renewable energy
  • Oil and gas decommissioning
  • Subsea cabling
  • Aggregates and dredging
  • Ports, harbours, and marinas
  • Aquaculture
  • Nuclear energy

This expansion represents a strategic step in delivering best-in-class marine biodiversity and ESG services to support Australia and the wider region as it transitions towards a more sustainable, ocean-driven economy.
