Secure OceanConnect portal streamlines sub-contractor management

October 9, 2025

A specialist portal has been developed by Ocean Ecology’s Data Solutions team for qualified and experienced field scientists who support our survey operations worldwide.

The portal, called OceanConnect, will help streamline the essential but time-consuming task of ensuring compliance for Marine Mammal Observers, PAM operators and environmental scientists with the specific regulatory requirements of each project.

OceanConnect functions as a secure database where sub-contractors can register and upload documents, such as CVs and certificates. They are also able to manage their profiles directly to keep them up to date and valid.

Ocean Ecology staff can review submissions, highlight missing information and monitor certificates due to expire. The portal also enables managers to quickly identify the most suitable candidates for specific surveys.

All data is processed in line with the UK’s data protection legislation and security best practices. The system has been rigorously tested by cybersecurity experts.

Head of Data Solutions Elliot Carter said: “OceanConnect was developed to answer needs identified by our survey managers. The number of surveys we’re involved in has increased significantly in recent years and consequently, the vital task of managing our support has become increasingly demanding. It was clear that a system to streamline this could save time and increase efficiency.”

Head of Survey Ashley Kirby said: “As our survey operations continue to expand, having the right people in place at the right time is critical. OceanConnect provides a clear, efficient system for our sub-contractors to manage their profiles and stay compliant, while giving us the ability to quickly verify qualifications and match the right expertise to project needs. This not only ensures regulatory compliance and strengthens the quality of our delivery but also enables us to consistently deliver the high-quality results our clients expect.”
