About the project
We were contracted by Environmental Sciences Ltd (ESL) to provide taxonomists in situ for the macrobenthic and planktonic analysis of both sediment and water samples collected from the near-coastal mudflats of Suriname. Work was conducted in ESL’s Benthic laboratory in Trinidad and samples came in two phases: first from the wet season and later from the dry season.

We provided taxonomic identification of marine zooplankton and macrobenthic fauna to family level, collated a reference library and established a specimen collection. Additional identification of macrobenthic specimens retrieved from post-drill samples at two well sites was also provided with identification to family level. And verification was provided for a further 40 specimens previously identified by ESL personnel.
Quality and communications
All analysis was carried out in line with our Quality Management Policy which aligns with NMBAQC best practice guidance.

Aquatonics Limited were providing the QA / QC and oversight. Given a short time frame, we worked closely with them, including the timely provision of the digital reference collection and the taxa record. Micrographs of any cryptic species or those with questionable identification were available as required. ESL were also provided with regular progress updates.
Results
Our analysis supported the sound guidance provided on the sustainable exploration of the area. We were also available after the project to address any concerns raised at the level of the Regulator, in the interest of ESL’s client securing the relevant permits to conduct project activities.
