Oil & gas

We provide a comprehensive range of specialist environmental services to support offshore oil and gas operators in both UK and international waters as the transition to decommissioning gathers pace.

Specialist Services for Decommissioning Projects

Our services are tailored to meet the unique challenges of decommissioning projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and minimising environmental impacts. Our key capabilities include:

  • Geophysical Site Surveys: Conducting geophysical surveys, including Multibeam Echosounder (MBES), Multibeam Backscatter (MBBS), and Side Scan Sonar (SSS), to inform site assessments and decommissioning strategies.
  • Pre- and Post-Decommissioning Environmental Surveys: Establishing seabed conditions through seabed imagery and sediment sampling in line with OGUK Seabed Environment Survey Guidelines. Our experienced marine scientists use state-of-the-art sampling equipment and bespoke launch and recovery systems to provide a robust baseline for monitoring.
  • Habitat Assessments (HA): Expert interpretation of geophysical and seabed imagery data to map sensitive seabed habitats, including Annex I habitats such as Sabellaria spinulosa reefs and stony reefs, guiding decommissioning activities and infrastructure removal.
  • Analysis and Reporting: Comprehensive analysis conducted in-house at our NMBAQC-participating laboratories, including macrobenthic and particle size distribution (PSD) assessments. We also provide contaminant analyses in collaboration with trusted and UKAS-accredited testing laboratories.
  • Biological Growth and Asset Integrity: Advanced 3D photogrammetry modelling to assess underwater structural integrity and accurately evaluate biological growth on assets.

Quality Services, Reliable Reporting

We prioritise high-quality data collection and reliable reporting through the use of in-house equipment and experienced teams. By performing critical sample processing and interpretation in our own laboratories, we maintain full control over project timelines and deliverables. This streamlined approach ensures we consistently provide actionable insights and timely results to our clients.

Trusted by the Industry

Ocean Ecology has a proven track record in supporting major decommissioning projects. Our experience includes baseline, monitoring, and targeted habitat assessments for production assets, pipelines, and umbilicals across various fields in the UK North Sea sector. We continue to build on this expertise and maintain the trust of operators to support safe infrastructure removal and long-term environmental management.
