M201 Iceland to Azores Research Cruise, marine mammal mitigation

DATE

Summer 2024

Location

Atlantic Ocean

During the summer of 2024, we partnered with the University of Hamburg for a six-week expedition aboard the RV Meteor. This survey, focused on studying underwater volcanoes southwest of Iceland, utilised seismic techniques that required dedicated monitoring to mitigate potential impacts on marine mammals.

With expertise in both visual observation and passive acoustic monitoring, our marine mammal observers recorded nearly 300 whale sightings, including humpback, fin, sperm, minke, pilot, and orca whales. The were possible blue whale sightings too. The team also observed dolphins and basking sharks, underscoring the rich biodiversity of the North Atlantic.
